New and Improved

For those viewers who have been waiting for several years for my next blog addition, I apologize for the long delay.   In the interim I have had to suffer through several years in an A-fib condition, lost a great deal of my energy, and in 2014 retired from a high school teaching position which I had held for over 30 years.  

During the last few years I instructed at Venice High School, I had several electrical cardio-versions and an ablation for atrial flutter.   In December of 2015, I traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, there I underwent a 7 hour procedure to correct the electrical problems with my heart.   With God’s help and the skillful hands of my friends at the University of Pen, my heart condition now seems to be completely straightened out.

They say when one door closes, God will open another, that is what I feel has happened in my life.   Retirement has opened up doors which I had not previously considered.   I have now been able to spend many more hours with my grandchildren that I otherwise would have missed.  

        

More importantly, I have been able to dedicate much more of the time God has given me to sharing the good news of our risen Savior.   In the past three years I have had the opportunities to serve the Lord more deeply through the church and other associations.   In The Gideons International I have been able to serve as a camp president, a regional program leader, and currently as an area director.   Over the years God has given me literally thousands of chances to share His Word.  

    

In some of the coming blogs, I hope to be able to share with you just some of the blessings which have been given to me as opportunities.   As an active member of my church, I have been able to show the love of God throughout my local community and in the world in which I live.

A Time For Prayer

Over the past few weeks we have been making our annual summer cross-country trip. This year our travels took us to Lorton, Virginia, Rochester, New York, Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, then back to Lorton before returning home to Venice, Florida. We had a wonderful relaxing time, truly enjoyed our family and friends. While staying at the home of my sister (Vicki) and her husband Larry DeWolf (a hospice chaplain), I was introduced to a pastor/author Craig Groeschel.



One of Craig’s books, “The Christian Atheist”, has been my summer reflective reading. I am not sure how accurate its title is, but this book has caused me to deeply look at my own faith. Though my faith has not changed, I believe a little introspection once in a while is a good thing. I encourage anyone who believes in God, but feels separated from Him because of events in this world to read Groeschel’s word of encouragement, then go back to the scriptures and read just how much God loves you.



When reading, I was particularly drawn to chapter 4 “When You Believe in God but Not in Prayer”. Prayer is more than just a form of communication, between you and the God of the universe; it is a way of humbly sharing yourself with one who loved you first. In chapter 4 Groeschel sites reasons why some people who believe in God don’t pray; “they aren’t good enough, don’t know how to pray, or that God won’t answer their prayers”. Let me assure you God will always answer prayers of His children, not always the way we think He should. As for being good enough; none of us is good enough, but for His mercy. God loves us in our imperfection, so even if you have never prayed before open up and share. As Groeschel would say “Talk to God about whatever is on your heart. Cry to Him if you need to. If you’re hurting, unload on Him. He can handle it. If you feel alone, ask Him to comfort you with His presence. If you’ve been away for a while, tell Him you’re ready to come home. If you’re angry, let it rip.”



I want to thank Larry for sharing this book with me and his home during the time I was in Rochester. He is a wonderful brother-in law, and an outstanding Sunday school teacher. I enjoyed sitting in on his class prior to Sunday services at Spencerport Bible Church. I also want to thank my son-in-law Phil for allowing us to stay at his home during our time in Virginia. We enjoyed attending church services at Fort Belvoir.

Slow To Anger


An important lesson my dad taught, me early in my life, was to think before speaking. There have been far too many of my students (during the 30 or so years that I was in the classroom), who truly needed to learn that lesson, but for one reason or another they had failed to learn it; usually they lacked a support system (living in a one parent household), or the family they had wasn’t Christ centered (other effects from these society woes, are better left to other blog enteries). Life’s lessons (how to live a Godly life) can not be taught in the classroom. They need to be instructed in the home. Each individual needs to have three strong pillars (mental, physical, and spiritual), this also holds true for small units in a society (family units), as well as communities in general. To cause someone to be angry because of unintended words, or to compound your own anger by eliciting a response from another by your own word or deeds, is often avoidable by carefully thought out responses to perceived negative behavior.

Proverbs 16:32 “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.”- King James

It is the person who carefully considers their response, as they determine what would be most constructive and pleasing in God’s eyes (I use to love those bracelets; WWJD), who is often considered most wise.

James 1:19-20 “My dear brothers, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for a man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”- NIV

In closing, I encourage you to think every time before speaking.

Proverbs 12:18 “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

May (Mother's Day) 2010 #2

I almost left the blog without posting at least one picture of my wonderful late mother.   She will always be remembered for her great love for her family, for others, and for the Lord Jesus Christ.   Here is my mom with my children.

Can’t tell ya if it was my mother’s patience with me, her strong and continuous love of the Lord, or her ability to love others even when deeply oppressed which was my mom’s greatest gift. The obvious thing is that I was greatly blessed to have my mom for over 50 years. My parents helped me to understand that there are three pillars in everyone’s life- the physical, the mental, and the spiritual. I may have mentioned this before, but my mom would make sure that I attended church with her every Sunday (attached is a picture of me in my normal Sunday garb). Mom was the one who realized just how important my college graduation was and was there at that time to support me. It was my mother who was my greatest fan, it didn’t matter which sport I was participating in she seemed to always be there to support me; my number one fan.

Anyone who is even thinking about becoming a parent needs to realize that once you are a parent it is vital that you no longer place yourself anywhere near the top of your priority list. So many times today, I see young men and women leaving their spouse and unfortunately their children for greener pastures. Friends the grass always looks greener on the other side; even if you think it smells better, don’t be fooled. Satin is the great deceiver. First, remember the vow you took on your wedding day; before God and man. Second, if you have your priorities right, your children should come way before your own desires; think about, what is going to be in their best interests. Third, if you are being plagued with doubts, talk to your pastor or another Christian friend, before approaching your spouse again. Here is where Christian counseling is often useful in opening the chain of communication within a relationship.

Talking to me between classes one of my students asked me (last week), how long I had been married. My response seemed to shock many of the students standing around; “I have been married to the same women for 35 years, and we dated for 5 years before that”. The student’s responses were remarkable. One student commented “see it is possible”. Another chimed in with, “you must have been high school sweethearts”. The first comment made me feel good as a role model, and the second has me feelin good for my age. This also reminds me of just how blessed I have been to have had Debbie to help me raise three wonderful daughters (attached is a picture of my family).

Now at the end of spring, we celebrate Mother’s Day. Let me encourage each of you to show the mother’s in you life just how special they are to you. For without the mom’s in my life neither I nor any of my family would have the strength of mind , body, or spirit that we have been gifted with today. Happy Mother’s Day 2010.

December 2009 BPFJ

Funny, how the things of the world can stress you out. It is hard to live in America today and not have times when you really feel completely stressed out. All kinds of things can get to you; the economy (jobs, the lack there of, investments, or the lack there of, where and how to spend what resources you have), relationships, politics, skewed morays and values of a growing number of people in our society who think very differently from you, or corruption and degradation spewing from the many types of media each of us is exposed to every day. It is no wonder Christmas time has been, in recent years, one of the most tragic times of the year, with increases in domestic violence and suicide.

Recently I was asked to host a major event, to raise money for scriptures for the world. When I started planning for the event I set a goal of $3000, with the expectation of around 50 people in attendance; the pressure was on. Caterer, speakers, music, and more all had to be planned and arranged. While others scoffed at my plan, with comments like- “you can only expect maybe 20 people to attend”, and “$3000, you’ll be lucky if you don’t owe that much when you’re finished”, I continued to move forward. I was constantly reminded that in the book of Hebrews God’s words are- “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you”, and that “The Lord is my helper: I will not be afraid.” Knowing that the Lord was with me, I pressed on. After many E-mail messages, mailed letters, phone calls, personal contacts, and rehearsals, the day of the event was quickly arriving. The day before, I had 37 prepaid reservations and 20 verbal commitments. A Christian brother had told me that I should “plan enough meals for all who plan to attend and a few extra”. When I contacted the caterer to give him the final numbers, I said we’ll have 62 meals; you talk about stress. Many things were running through my mind; how am I going to pay for all those meals if only 37 people show up; even if enough people show up, is it even possible to reach the lofty monetary goal that was set out; not to mention one of my musicians was down on his back with a bad case of the flu the previous day. Yet, this thought echoed in my head and drew me back into prayer- God will never leave you, nor forsake you. I must admit I spent many hours in prayer, during the preparation for this event.

The day of the event finally arrived. All of the participants arrived, including all of the musicians. The 62 meal arrived. Gradually, so did all of the invited guests, as well as many unexpected ones. In fact, when the final count was taken 62 people had come to Birthday Party For Jesus event. When a final count was taken for the money raised for scriptures, it totaled over $4800; to God be the glory.

Jesus quote- “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” – Luke 11:25-26

Let’s start over! Yesterday I had a former student write that she wished it was still her birthday. I couldn’t help myself but write back that “I wished it was mine too, 35 years ago”. The interesting thing here is that I think at one point or another (in each of our lives) we have wished we were able to start over. Undo what was done and start a new.

We’ve all had a longing for a new start, New Life, Fresh Beginnings. We worry about the things we have done, the things we didn’t do, jobs, friends, money, all kinds of things, driving us to grasp for new life. Jesus once told his disciples, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”[book of Luke 12:25] Jesus goes on to say “For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and all these things will be given to you as well.” [Luke 12:30-31]

Speaking of new life, I was in the delivery room when all of my children were born; I had never before experienced such joy, as watching my daughters take their first breath as they entered this world. I have recently been reminded of these moments in my life, when my eldest daughter (Allison) gave birth to my first grandbaby (Keegan)(see the attached picture). There is nothing more precious than new birth.

I have always found new life to be the greatest gift God has ever given me. Not physical, but spiritual life; Life through Christ Jesus. “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His child as well. This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” [book of 1 John 5:1 & 4] It’s interesting that a faith in Jesus can allow us to start over with God and overcome the world.

Faith and Life

The dictionary defines it as complete trust or confidence. In the book of Hebrews it says, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see”. The world would tell us that the only things you can be certain of are death and taxes. The only thing you can truly trust is money. To the world you can only be confident if you look great and are sexually marvelous. So faith is not the same, for someone who follows The Way, as it is for someone who lives as those who follow the ways of the world.

In Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesis he writes, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient”. Therefore we can have faith that the ways of the world will lead to our death and destruction.

What about faith and life? Again in Hebrews, chapter 11, it says, “By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward”. Have faith in Christ and take comfort in His words, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”.

The picture was taken on a long outdoor mall in the middle of Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. The man received his blue testament from me and had followed us along the mall, praising God, and telling everyone he met how blessed he was to have received God’s Word, and that I was the man with the bibles. In the picture he is thanking Chazy our young interpreter, while asking her to tell us how thankful he was. Oh, that we could have the faith of a child, and accept the Word of God with such open and thankful hearts.

Summer Heroes

Tonight I received a Facebook posting from a young friend that went like this, “We need a hero to save us from ourselves. We need a hero to save us from our fear”. My response was that “JFK once said, we have nothing to fear but fear itself, as for a hero to save us from ourselves, He died and rose again for just that reason about 2000 years ago.” I was then notified that what was written were song lyrics by Jars of Clay, from a song titled Hero. This started me thinking, (dangerous) who are our heroes?

In the world today there are sports heroes. We have all seen war heroes. There are heroes of all kinds out there, based on what someone has done, their accomplishments. As I go back to my trusty dictionary I find the word hero defined as “a person noted or admired for notability, courage, outstanding achievements, a great warrior, a man of superhuman qualities, favored by the gods.”

What are great accomplishments? Accomplishments inspired by the Word of God. In the book of the prophet Isaiah it says, “so is My Word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it”. Now we have a hero whose extraordinary accomplishments are inspired by God.

In my life time I have had the opportunity to experience many heroes, but one who you may not be aware of is Edwin Moses. It was this great warriors, courage, outstanding achievements, notability, superhuman qualities, and favor with the one true God, which cause me to clearly see him as a hero. Reverend Moses was the pastor of the United Methodist church in Biloxi, Mississippi, during and after the disaster known as hurricane Katrina. Not only did he help provide for the needs of his flock, but he also brought in hundreds of volunteers, from all over America to assist in the reconstruction of his community. With every group of volunteers that arrived in Biloxi, Rev. Moses would share the history of his community, the love it contained, his heart, and the Word of God. I believe Rev. Moses knew (that in the long run) what he was doing for the young men and women who came to Biloxi, would far exceed anything they could do for him or the community. The picture I have included is of one of two mission groups which I worked with, and Rev. Moses. In the gospel of Matthew it says, “store up for yourself treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. Edwin Moses was a hero who stored up treasure.

Summer Growth 2009

Here it is just another lazy summer day, in July. This is usually the time for me to regenerate, to sit back and reflect on my place in the world; not to stop building. Even at times like these, when we are not facing a strong headwind, we need to maintain our stride because the race is not over for us yet. At this point I almost feel as though I am just gliding downhill, without the usual push to succeed or to produce some final product.

As I look ahead I realize that other mountains are awaiting me and the challenges of tomorrow may be even greater than those I have faced in the past. I look forward with faith that I am not alone. The struggles that are in front of me will not overwhelm me, if I rely on the one who has promised to always be there; Jesus. He never promised that life would be easy, just that he would never leave me. Hebrews 13:5b- “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you”.

Summer is a wonderful time of year. Days filled with sunshine, green plants, and life all around us. This is one of my favorite times during the year. Now that I am expecting a new grandson to be born next month, it has become even a more exciting time for me. [The attached picture is of my three daughters; Allison is expecting a boy in August.] God has blessed my life, and filled it with great joy. I am extremely thankful.

Tribute to Will Hope

Suddenly it happened;
in a moment it was over. I am reminded again today how fragile life is and just how short a life time can be. None of us knows when or where God will call us home. It is just good those of us who believe, that Jesus came so that our sins might be forgiven, know there will one day be a home-coming for us. You see, today I lost a younger friend to a sudden and massive heart attack.

I remember meeting Will for the first time. He was one of about 20 business men being introduced to the Gideon ministry, through our new member plan. Will was the guy whose contagious laugher made you want to laugh along with him. He was the guy who when given the challenge, joyfully committed to whatever God’s plan was in his life. Unlike many of the other members who joined the ministry that evening, Will and his wife June joined together; inseparable right to the end.

Recently both Will and I were called to take offices within the Gideon ministry beyond our local camp; Will as an Area Director and I as a Regional Program Leader. Because of the economy and some fears of our families (that we might be getting over committed), I know we spent many hours in prayerful consideration before committing to taking these offices within the ministry. As with all of the roles he felt called to take, Will entered this new role with great excitement and joy. We traveled up to our first training session in Ocala together. All the way up and back we discussed the many blessing God had given us (families, friends, and ministries), always with optimism and the knowledge that God was in control. I recall Will relaying the story of how his pastor had suggested he consider becoming a deacon at church, and how he had gone to the Gideon state convention only to hear that many of the busiest state officers had other time consuming roles such as being deacons in their churches. Will always knew when the Lord was calling him and once again he joyfully took on this role in his local church. Will, with great enthusiasm became the hands and feet of God in this world.

When Will committed to doing something you could bet he was going to do it to the best of his ability. As his Gideon camp president, Will was always organized and on time for every event. He was always at and led all camp meetings and cabinet meetings. I guess that is why so many of our Gideons noticed something was ary, when they arrived at our regular Saturday morning prayer breakfast and didn’t see his truck in the lot. This morning as Will and June were preparing to join us, he had a massive heart attack and died.

Remember these words of truth-
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life”. John 5:24
At my homecoming I look forward to seeing all the saints who have gone before me, and to hearing Will Hope’s laughter coming from the midst of the crowd.

Victory this summer 6-09-09

The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. This was a slogan for a sports show call the “wide-world of sports”. Think about it. We have placed so much value on the win in sports, or the monetary gain, or stepping up the social ladder that we may have lost track of what in life really has value. What value is the thrill of victory? I can think of only one lasting victory, only one time when the high cost of victory was truly worth it; it was the time when Jesus gave His life to achieve victory over sin and death.

Does this mean the goal of victory in life is pointless? No. Life is filled with little trials, where there will be a winner and a loser. One thing I learned very early in life is a person should always use the gifts God has given him to the best of his ability; in other words, in all that you do always give it your best. If God has called you to be a football player, be the best football player you can be. If God has called you to be a musician, be the best you can be. If you are called to a pastoral role, be the best you can be. Didn’t the army have a slogan something like that once?

Always remember you have a purpose, a hope, a reason for being here; to tell others about the saving grace we have in Jesus. Don’t be afraid to lose in life, because Jesus has already won the final victory. Enjoy the little victories in life. The grandson leading his lacross team to a championship while scoring goals. The daughter's solid play leading to winning her soccer match.
Or a daughter leaving others in the dust during a 10 K race. In life all things will pass. Remember the gifts of God and be thankful.

Almost Summer 5-31-09

When I saw the beauty in the world around me, I couldn’t help but feel the awe and wonder of the hand of God. This picture is one I had taken of the flower bed in my front yard, in Venice, Florida. Some times I am blinded by sin and hate, unable or unwilling to see God’s will for my little corner of the universe. God’s perfect will for my life and yours is not always our will. In John 15:7, Jesus says, “if you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you”. As summer rapidly approaches my prayer for you is that you will read God’s Holy Word, allow it to abide in you, so that you might obtain the awesome strength that comes in a right relationship with God.

May flowers 2009

I know that April showers are suppose to bring May flowers, but it has been our heavy rains in May that have really brought out the spring flowers. In my yard I have had big beautiful roses, sweet gardenias, and all kinds of lilies come into bloom. Whenever I picture the garden that God had prepared for Adam and Eve this is what I imagine. Oh how wonderful is the beauty that only God can create. While God was busy creating the natural wonders around us, we too have been busy this month as His hands and feet in the world.

May is the conclusion for the fiscal year in the Gideons ministry. As a result of the dedication and hard work of many members of our local camp, more bibles were distributed, more churches received presentations of the Gideon message, and more funds were raised locally for more scripture than in any year since I have been a member. The ladies of our Auxiliary can be credited with most of the camp’s distributions. We have even had to go outside of the camp for speakers, to cover all of the churches that have wished to have the Gideons come in and give a presentation to their congregations. When just before He ascended, Jesus told His disciples to “make disciples of all nations”, “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you”, it was our call to share His Word so that the Holy Spirit can lead others to the saving knowledge of Jesus.

As the Lord has blessed my ministry, so too He has blessed my family. Recently my youngest daughter (Deanna) has found a good paying job, working with people (she is definitely is a people person), in a very troubled job market. Another daughter (Amy) has decided to marry her boyfriend (John). I ask all of my friends to pray that this couple will put God at the center of this new relationship they are about to embark on. My eldest daughter (Allison) and her husband (Phil) are about to have my first grand-baby. I never thought I’d be this excited about grandchildren; how wonderful! Every time I think about all these blessing, I have to say a prayer thanking God for what He has done.

Preconfirmation 4-25-09

All glory to God always. Having just completed two of the most fruitful weeks in our Gideon camps history, with a very successful Pastors Appreciation Banquet (PAB) and a Gideon message at the local Salvation Army Church, we are now looking forward to the Florida State Convention of The Gideons International, while simultaneously completing a long period of preparation for the confirmation of several youth at Grace United Methodist Church, the challenge of finding a new leader for our praise team, and the end of another school year. We have been blessed beyond measure. Thank God that He has chosen His servant to undertake such formidable tasks. But didn’t I read once, that it said somewhere “My yoke is easy and my burden is light” [Matthew 11:28-30]?

What lies behind us seems too grand for us to have accomplished, yet the mountain we see in front of us seems so insurmountable. How did we meet the challenges of our past? It all started with prayer. We prayed for every aspect of the PAB. We bathed our service at the Salvation Army with prayer. For once my heart and mind are in agreement. We should be praying for every part of the confirmation, pray for the state convention, pray that God will call the right person to lead our music ministry, and even pray for the children and their teachers as the school year comes to a close. “Anything in my name you ask, you will receive” [John 16:24]. Remember this holds true for you as well. I am convinced that what we have accomplished took place by the hand of God, and the only way for us to overcome the challenges in our future is if it is His will.

In a time when our society seems to be turning away from God, our church has one of the largest confirmation classes I can ever remember. Tomorrow, all of these fine youths will be confirmed into the church; what a joy to see so many committing their lives to the Lord. Having been a mentor to one of the youths and having attended retreats with the youths, I bare witness to the personal relationship each of these young people have developed with our Lord Jesus Christ.

So, where do you stand in the scheme of things? Do you have praises to give for the miraculous things that have happened in your life? Are you feeling the tremendous weight of tasks that have been placed in front of you, too large for you to bare alone? You are not alone. Jesus has said “And surely I am with you always” [Matthew 28:19-20]. This doesn’t mean only when you are successful, rich, strong, winning. He will be with you when you fail, are pour, weak, are lost and even in those times when you can not seem to find a friend, God will be there.

Kingdom Opportunity 4-03-09

Recently I was asked to take a leadership role in Florida for the The Gideons International. As I looked at what this role would entail, I discovered that for me to be successful I would have to be extremely efficient, have no extra meetings other than those I am already aware of, and assistance from both my brother Gideons and my family. Having taken on positions like this in the past I am quite aware of the stress that goes along with the long hours, and so is my family. So, when I told my wife about the position and that I was considering it, she flew off the handle. With all the positions both paid and volunteer that I currently hold, with seemingly too little time to complete tasks already before me, and now without the support of my family I felt crushed. This was just about enough to convince me that I should decline this offer, but then I remembered my own words. When the position was offered to me I told our regional coordinator that I would pray about it, and that night I did just that.

The next morning at our weekly prayer breakfast I read these words in Luke 9:62- “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God”. There isn’t a person on earth whose point of view I would feel bad about rejecting, yet this was the Big Guy speaking. Everything told me that this position was all wrong for me, but suddenly there it was- am I fit for His kingdom.

A little over a year ago, I went on a mission trip with about 20 youths from the Venice area to the Dominican Republic. When I first felt the calling for this trip I recall feeling the same way as I do now. I couldn’t understand why I was going. I couldn’t afford it; I needed to raise over $1000. I couldn’t speak the language; the one year of Spanish I took in high school (over 30 years ago), was definitely not enough to get by. Although I knew many of the kids from helping with the youth group, there were many who I had very little prior contact with. Raising the money was easy, as sponsors were coming out of the woodwork to support me; in fact so much was given that I was able to help other missionaries. When we arrived in the Dominican we discovered that the missionary family with whom we were staying had developed strong ties to a local church youth group, several of the youths were excellent interpreters (including the missionary’s two children). As a group we developed ties throughout the time we were there. I was blessed over and over again during this time, as I had the opportunity to witness and distribute nearly 100 testaments during the week we were there. I now realize that when God offers you a kingdom opportunity it is to bless you not to challenge you.

March 28th Update

This has been a very busy spring and I am currently keeping up a FaceBook account, remaining active as a part of the Grace UMC praise team, and as a speaker for The Gideons International. God has bless me with a very active life style for an old man. Every time I have time enough to take a run of more than 5 miles, every time I have one of God's creatures settle in next to me, every time I am able to take the miracle which is my next breath, I feel the need to praise God. Our praise team sings almost every week at Grace United Methodist Church, in Venice, Florida, during the 9:00 AM contemporary service on Sunday morning. I hope to be a major part of the upcoming Pastors Appreciation Banquet for my local Gideon camp (Lemon Bay), on April 15th. Then on April 19th, I expect to conduct the entire Sunday service for the Salvation Army Church, in Venice, Florida. Between then and now I expect to collect and grade all of the notebooks from my science students, and spend some quality time with my daughter and two step grandsons. Yes, this has been and will continue to be a very busy spring.

Advent Season 12-04-08

As always this time of year leaves me anticipating the coming of the one who has always been with me; Jesus. You start to think about new birth, and deep within your heart you feel renewed, as God's gift to mankind is once again "in your face". It seems as though even nonbelievers can't help but get into Jesus's birth; this reminds me of the scripture that reads "if we don't praise Him, then even the rocks will cry out". Just thinking about Jesus, makes me want to praise Him. My prayer for you is that the joy of the season, God's gift to the world, will fill your heart and make you too want to praise.

10-28-08 Update

Today started out with my reading these words "If we died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him" (2 Timothy: 11 - 12). What a wonderful thought! If we die to the sinful nature of this world, then we can obtain salvation by believing in the one who died so that we might have eternal glory, Christ Jesus. Think about this, Jesus not only offers us life, but abundant life; to be with Him in eternal glory. Wow, it doesn't get much better than that.
